The Cari Network is building a blockchain-based payment system powering real-time, 24/7 movement of digital money across the traditional finance and digital asset ecosystems. A pre-launch startup, we’re creating an entirely new category of financial infrastructure that brings cash on chain through tokenization while powering the full spectrum of payments for our network—banks, digital asset exchanges, and, most importantly, the customers they serve.

We are seeking a General Counsel to lead the legal function that underpins Cari’s commercial and operational growth. You will own a high volume of contract negotiations with highly regulated U.S. banks and third-party service providers, coordinating reviews across internal teams to bring agreements to signature quickly and safely.

About the Role

Cari is seeking an experienced General Counsel to serve as the company’s senior-most legal leader and a foundational member of the team. This is a high-impact, cross-functional role centered on negotiating and closing a high volume of complex commercial agreements with highly regulated U.S. banks and third-party service providers. As part of Cari’s shared services function, the General Counsel will support the contracting needs of teams across the company, partnering closely with risk and compliance, finance, product, and technology to move agreements efficiently to signature. The role reports directly to the Chief Operating Officer and collaborates closely with the rest of the Cari founding team.

What You'll Do

  • Lead Contract Negotiations: Own and run a high volume of contract negotiations with highly regulated U.S. banks and third-party service providers, taking agreements from initial terms through execution.

  • Coordinate Cross-Functional Review: Drive contract review across internal stakeholders—including risk and compliance, finance, product and technology—ensuring issues are surfaced, resolved, and documented before signing.

  • Serve as Shared-Services Legal Counsel: Act as a central legal resource across the company, supporting the contracting needs of multiple internal teams and standardizing templates, playbooks, and processes to scale throughput.

  • Manage Legal and Regulatory Risk: Identify, assess, and mitigate legal and regulatory risk across commercial agreements, advising leadership on tradeoffs in a fast-moving, highly regulated environment.

  • Advise on Crypto and Digital Assets: Provide practical guidance on the legal and regulatory considerations relevant to bank payments, tokenization, and digital assets, partnering with compliance to keep the Network’s commercial activity sound.

  • Build the Legal Function: Establish the contracting infrastructure, external counsel relationships, and operating cadence needed to support a rapidly growing, pre-launch company.

Qualifications

  • U.S.-based with the ability to travel as needed.

  • J.D. and active membership in good standing of at least one U.S. state bar.

  • 10+ years of relevant legal experience, including significant time negotiating commercial contracts with highly regulated U.S. banks or financial institutions.

  • Demonstrated experience leading high-volume contract negotiations with banks and third-party service providers, and coordinating contract reviews across internal teams (risk and compliance, finance, product, technology, and similar).

  • Familiarity with crypto, blockchain, and digital asset technology; understanding of the regulatory landscape for bank payments and tokenization is a significant plus.

  • Strong working knowledge of commercial, vendor, and technology contracting, including experience standardizing templates and contracting processes to support high volume.

  • Exceptional negotiation, drafting, communication, and stakeholder-management skills.

  • Proven ability to work independently and thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced startup environment.
